This directory contains the following files available for download (see below for notes on installing these):

Unix/Linux:

tcltkblt-8.4.9.irix64.bin.tar.gz Executables and libraries for Tcl/Tk 8.4.9 and BLT2.4z built on IRIX 6.5 n.b. these are 32-bit executables
tcltkblt-8.4.9.i386.bin.tar.gz Executables and libraries for Tcl/Tk 8.4.9 and BLT2.4z built on Red Hat Linux 8
tcltkblt-8.4.9.sunos.bin.tar.gz Executables and libraries for Tcl/Tk 8.4.9 and BLT2.4z built on SunOS 5.8

Windows:

ActiveTcl8.4.4.0-win32-ix86.exe Self-installing package with Tcl/Tk8.4.4
blt24z-for-tcl84.exe Self-installing package containg BLT which is compatible with Tcl/Tk8.4.4

Comments
1. See below for information on building the packages from the source code.
2. For Windows at least, the BLT executable should be installed into the same directory as the Tcl/Tk exectutables.
3. NOTE that some files for blt2.4z have been modified from the official version, to deal with compilation problems experienced under certain platforms.

Unpacking and installing the files

Building Tcl/Tk/BLT from the source archive tcl_tk_blt.tar.gz

To unpack the source code:

  1. Move the tcl_tk_blt.tar.gz archive to the directory where you wish to unpack and install the source code - for example, /usr/local (or you may wish to create a special directory to put the files in).

  2. Unpack the archive using:

    gzip -dc tcl_tk_blt.tar.gz | tar xvf -

This will create the following subdirectories in the current directory:
    tcl8.4.9/
    tk8.4.9/
    blt2.4z/
plus a file README_TclTkBLT and the scripts build_tcltkblt.sh and build_nonshared_tcltkblt.sh.

build_tcltkblt.sh which will try and automatically build the three packages for you (versions that don't use shared libraries can be built using the build_nonshared_tcltkblt.sh script, which is otherwise equivalent). The required steps are:

  1. Edit the script to set the following variables appropriately:

ROOT = the directory containing this script and the tcl/tk/blt
                   directories
LOCAL= the place you want to install the packages

  2. (Optionally) Set the CC variable if you wish to use a different C compiler to "cc" (for example, gcc).

  3. Execute the command ./build_tcltkblt.sh to start the automatic build.

  4. When the installation is complete, remember to set the CCP4I_TCLTK environment variable in ccp4.setup to point to this directory.

If you have problems then a list of general installation issues for Tcl/Tk/BLT can be found here.

If you wish to build the packages yourself then look at the README and INSTALL files in each subdirectory. You should also note that there have been modifications to some files in the blt2.4z distribution, to deal with compilations problems on various platforms, including 64-bit platforms.

Installing the pre-built Tcl/Tk/BLT binaries

To unpack the binaries:

  1. Move the tcltkblt-8.4.9.SYSTEM.bin.tar.gz archive to the directory where you wish to unpack and install the binaries - for example, /usr/local (or you may wish to create a special directory to put the files in).

  2. Unpack the archive using:

    gzip -dc tcltkblt-8.4.9.SYSTEM.bin.tar.gz | tar xvf -

This will create the following subdirectories in the current directory:
    bin/
    include/
    lib/
    man/

  3. When the installation is complete, remember to set the CCP4I_TCLTK environment variable in ccp4.setup to point to this directory.
